What Your LinkedIn Photo Says About You

Updating your LinkedIn photo can feel more intimidating than updating your relationship status on Facebook.

When is the last time you updated your LinkedIn photo? If you’re like most of us, it’s been a while.

While it can feel intimidating to update your profile photo on social media - especially professional social media - just know that it’s worth it. A lot of networking has gone digital and it’s great to present an accurate depiction of who you are.

Maybe you have an old photo of yourself that a friend took at a party. That photo might say, “This is good enough. I’ll update this when I have the chance.”

Or you might have a selfie that you took a couple years ago. This could say, “Well, I’m trying here. Better than nothing.”

A professional headshot sets the intention: “I care about how I show up in the world and I am excited to connect.”

No judgment - we’ve all been there! While others perception of you isn’t all on you, putting forth the intention of taking a photo for the professional world specifically can create more trust between you and your connections.

Here are three things you want to keep in mind when it comes to your LinkedIn photo:

1. Keep it simple

The good news about the way LinkedIn has shifted over the years is that it runs more on authenticity than it ever has before. You can have a little fun with it by adding a pop of color to your outfit or a cool backdrop, but overall, keeping it simple is key. Save the fun stuff for your posts. 2. The higher the quality, the better

A high quality image can mean many things, but most importantly it’s sharp and clear. Usually the more pixels an image contains, the better quality it is. Photo resolution boils down to how easily the camera can identify and point to the focus of the image in order for it to make sense to the viewer. An easy way to get a high quality image is by hiring a photographer. Phone cameras have gotten better over the years, but professional photographers have better tools and the expertise to make the photos really stand out.

3. Make sure the photo is just of you and smile!

While we love group photos, it is best to keep a profile image of just you! You’re the focus of your profile and want to leave the best impression possible when someone checks out your page. Here are some tips to prepare for your photo!

An exception to this rule is if you want an accessory or prop that is also relevant to your business or expertise. An example could be if you sell beautiful necklaces and want to have one of those in your photo. Even if it is normally distracting, since it goes with your brand and therefore goes with your LinkedIn, it’s a good prop to include.

Whether you refreshed your LinkedIn photo last year or 10 years ago, consider celebrating yourself and updating your profile picture!
