Buffalo Porch Portraits

In March 2020, the unthinkable happened. BELLINI STUDIOS (Formerly Heather Bellini Photography), was there to capture this unprecedented event.

The story behind Buffalo Porch Portraits

In March, 2020, the unthinkable happened. Many small businesses struggled amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Shops closed, social interactions ceased, and weddings were rescheduled.

Buffalo resident Heather Bellini had directly felt the harsh effects of isolation in her full-time wedding and event photography business.

Yet knowing the heavy weight of this unprecedented quarantine on local families, Heather began a new photography project, “Buffalo Porch Portraits.” Following the government-requested social distancing guidelines, Heather enabled families to schedule a free photo shoot online, arrived in the front yard during each family’s scheduled time, and took professional photos from 12 feet away using only verbal interactions.

In the spirit of positivity and given her desire to celebrate families during this unprecedented time, Heather offered these portrait sessions at no cost.

After 8 solid weeks of traveling around Western New York, Heather and her assistant, Brian, photographed 115 families. What she never expected was the strong emotion that would come along with taking on this project. She collected stories from each and every family, a small portion of which are showcased below. The impact on Buffalo’s history is profound and it is her proudest accomplishment to date.

  • COVID-19 has changed us as family, it has helped our family depend on less and rely on what is important. We have the hardest struggle with home schooling, but are getting used to our new schedule. We can’t wait to spend time with our friends and family!
    Sandra Freeman

  • My husband and I are working from home while trying to engage our 6 and 8 year old daughters. While we remain at home, we thought this would be a fun way to bring a positive “spin” on getting our spring pictures taken. Our daughters love to get dressed up and this allowed them the perfect opportunity.

  • Everyone In our family stays in home. We are not Going to stores, work school daycare doesn’t visit family and friends postponed our daughters birthday party due to social distancing. Sharing space in our home to work and follow daily routines and home schooling our daughter.
    Jill Fettes

  • My husband and I are both in the service industry so both out of work. Very scary trying to keep our child safe and see our elderly parents during this time. Thank you for the picture dad gave us something to look forward to in the dark times!
    Tessa Gannon

  • We are having our first baby in June of 2020. We have had to cancel our baby shower, but will be trying a drive thru shower where family and friends can drop gifts off as we wave from a distance. We are concerned with our family and friends not being able to meet the baby when she is born and will miss the beginning months of her life. We know this is all temporary and are just happy to welcome a healthy baby girl in just a couple months.

  • Our family was discombobulated at first trying to adjust to life at home. We have kept an optimistic mindset and have learned to value and appreciate all that we have. There are definitely trying times, but when focusing on the positives we have walked together, built together, cleaned together and learned together. We are fortunate for all of those on the front line and all of those who offer their services to bring joy like you!!

  • My boyfriend and I are due with our first child in the beginning of June. This past Saturday was supposed to be our baby shower but it was obviously canceled. My sister, mom and boyfriend surprised me with a parade- tons of family and friends drove by hoking, playing music in decorated cars to celebrate our boy! It wasn’t the baby shower we planned for but it was so much more meaningful and memorable.

  • Some members of our family have come down with the virus and are recovering. For that we are EXTREMELY grateful. Other than that, we've found ways to stay connected with all of our kids from coast to coast, and are looking forward to better days. We're so full of gratitude for all of the people who have kept our community, our state, and our country afloat.
    Sandy Barton (Kaiser)

  • Our daughter was born March 6, just days before social distancing rules went into effect. Unfortunately most of our friends and family have not been able to meet her yet. However, since Rob is a teacher he has been able to be at home and spend time as a family. We are used to being on the go all the time so it has been a big change staying home! We are making sure we do everything we can to keep our family and everyone else safe.
